The History Of Incense

The History of Incense Some 2500 years ago in India, when Buddhism was widespread, the practice of making incense was usually performed by monks, who used between 20 and 30 ingredients including herbs and flowers. When burned, the resulting combinations produced aromas known to have therapeutic qualities. When Buddhism moved East, so did the practice of incense making. With the passage of time, learned monks recorded the proportions of each ingredient used, as well as the manufacturing techniques. This body of knowledge was recorded in scriptural form. Some of these manuscripts serve as the basis for Lama Chodpa Tibetan Incense. Some other types of incenses available today incorporate a combination of up to 100 ingredients, using wood, spices and minerals. Most of Tibetan incense is nowadays made in India, the country where incense making had its roots. Tibetan incense, known as dulpi is quite different from the dhoop used in Hindu ceremonies, made around a wooden core.
